Lets face it, when it comes to public transport - opting for healthy options can prove a somewhat difficult task. I can't remember the last time I was offered a snack or an in-flight meal that wasn't laden with fat, salt and sugar or resembled something you'd find on the back shelf of the fridge at the local petrol station. Snacks come in the form of chocolate bars and crisps, whilst the so called 'meals' radiate about as much life as a sack of potatoes. This issue unfortunately isn't something that's going to be changed in the near future, but that doesn't mean we health concious beings can't try and beat the system in the meantime...
I don't know about anyone else, but I think aeroplane food takes the prize for culinary monstrosities amongst other modes of transport (excluding First Class, I am yet to be lucky enough to experience this). I understand that there are a number of complications surrounding what types food can be stored and prepared easily during a flight, but you'd think by now airlines would of come up with something better than finger sandwiches and questionably looking sausage and mash.
During my long flight back from Sydney to London - I knew that skipping all five provided meals wasn't going to be an option, so I prepared a few things to keep me going through my 22 hour journey home.
- Peppermint tea bags (great for the digestion after mealtimes)
- Cashews, almonds, walnuts etc (packed with protein, great as a snack)
- BOUNCE power balls (If you can make your own, even better - but these are a good substitute for on the go)
- Coconut water (It's so important to keep our bodies hydrated, especially during long flights. Remember to keep a couple of cartons of Vita Coco or bottled water nearby)
