STRIPD VISITS: RIVERFORD FIELD KITCHEN

December 4, 2016

When you enjoy eating out on a regular basis, it’s natural that your surrounding restaurant choices can seem a little lack lustre from time to time. To avoid reaching a dining plateau, I’m forever hunting for new places to try - following recommendations and Instagram tags in the search for new names to shout about. With the anticipation of two Scorpio birthdays in the family this weekend – it was the perfect opportunity to find an alternative Sunday Lunch setting that would make an impression in our minds as well as our stomachs.

Sitting quietly in the hills of Buckfastleigh, The Riverford Field Kitchen is everything you’d want from a unique dining occasion. It’s chocolate-box exterior and organic surroundings radiate a cosy and inviting setting for any planned foodie occasion. With a number of awards under their belt, the team here have built a sound reputation for themselves, offering an aesthetically pleasing eating experience that can be enjoyed by all ages.

The premise of this venue is simple: ethically sourced, localised produce served in a comfortable and sociable environment. With the Riverford grounds close by, mealtimes here are an opportunity to put on an attractive display of the home-grown meat and vegetables the Farm are so proudly known for. Each dish provided is beautifully presented, offering a colourful feast for your eyes and stomach to enjoy. Not only are the recipe pairings delicious and inventive, but the efforts and attention to detail behind this visual feast are what makes this whole eating experience even more special.

The seating arrangements are open and unchartered, giving diners the chance to mingle with one another. Food is plated in abundance, encouraging you to help yourself to as much or as little as you like. The main meal is centred around a meat, vegetarian or vegan option, with dairy and gluten-free adjustments on offer if required. After craving something a little different, I opted for a slice of the Leek and Onion Tart w/ Wootton white cheese. Regardless of what you decide, the limelight here is placed firmly upon the organic, seasonal veg - proving that these too can be a worthy centrepiece at any meal time.

If you can find room for dessert (always), then you'll be escorted to the kitchen area where the chef will talk you through the selections of the day. Choose from one generous portion or two smaller if you just can't decide.

This very generous three course feasting is priced at a reasonable £23.50 pp (£27.50 at dinner times). If like me you like to absorb the entire atmosphere when eating out, then you'll certainly feel satisfied when visiting the Riverford Field Kitchen.

Though I may not squeeze another table sitting in before Christmas, i'll definitely be marking some of their festive events and workshops into my iCal (21st century plug).
