As I sit writing this from my IKEA bedroom desk, I can’t help but feel gobsmacked that my visit to Highcliffe B&B was almost a month ago today. I’ll admit, it’s taken me a while to put this one together - but I’ve concluded that great things just simply can’t be rushed.
The last time I took a trip to Falmouth I was 14, a moody adolescent that would rather be in her room playing cupid on The Sims than going on a Cornish day trip with her parents. At that age, I wasn’t interested in taking in the sights or surroundings – so if I’m honest, I don’t remember much about this little seaside town. Now, however, I’ve got a whole new understanding as to why Falmouth is one of Cornwall’s most creative and understated trendy destinations – boasting some excellent restaurants, galleries, boutique shops and hotels.
Highcliffe B&B fits into the above list, offering a wonderful escape that combines vibrant interiors, breath-taking views and thoughtful hosts. With eight bespoke bedrooms spread across two floors, a bright dining space and an extremely Instagrammable living room (featuring a very funky banana leaf printed sofa) – Highcliffe has all the elements of a very commendable modern retreat.
Whether you’re staying for one night or many (lucky you), Highcliffe have everything on hand to ensure you a perfect night’s stay. With high Edwardian ceilings, harbourside views, bold coloured furnishings and big, marshmallowey beds – each individually styled room will offer you comfort from the minute you turn the key.
From Penthouse Suites to wallet-friendly singles, every one of these eight cosy bolt-holes carry the same sparkle as each other – so you’ll never feel like you’re missing out.
If the English weather takes a turn for the worst (let’s face it, it’s possible), then enjoy snuggling up on the bed with a book or perhaps draw a bubble bath whilst enjoying the Cornish views. Otherwise, take advantage of a day exploring and revel in the fact you’ve got a special hideaway waiting for you when you return.
For me, one of the best parts of going away is waking up to a delicious breakfast – and after catching wind via Instagram that Highcliffe’s were pretty special, I couldn’t wait to try for myself.
Roll out of bed and make your way down to the breakfast room (where the foodie magic happens) – complete with large bay window, restored furniture and a statement wall dressed in some very chic wallpaper. Waiting for you you’ll find a very healthy selection of jams, spreads, yoghurts and cereals – not to mention a Kilner jar full of utterly moreish Granola (this paired with a dollop of Raspberry curd is bliss for your tastebuds), homemade by the lovely hostess Vanessa. There’s also a selection of cooked breakfasts available, featuring Full English for both meat-eaters and vegetarians and a weekly special – this time is was Smoked Salmon and scrambled eggs on buttery Rye Sourdough with a homemade tomato salsa.
If you’re looking for places to eat out, you won’t be stuck for choice – just spoilt. If only I’d had longer to explore (and stretchier trousers) I would’ve tried to tick more off my list, however I’m still very satisfied by our choices;
Good Vibes – A gorgeous little breakfast/lunch spot on Killigrew Street where you’ll be blown away by some fantastic menus, delicious cakes and very creative presentation. Caters for veggies and vegans.
Gylly Beach Café – One of Cornwall’s most talked about restaurants and winner of numerous awards. Prime beach views, superb local faire and welcoming staff – an absolute treat for all the senses.
Dolly’s Gin Bar – A quirky night spot for apres dinner Gin and cocktails. Live music, candlelit tables, relaxed atmosphere and vintage décor. Cocktails are served in teapots and poured into vintage cups, with ice cubes in sugar bowls – very kitsch.
Ol Factory – A firm favourite among the Cornish restaurants, cafes and coffee lovers alike. Created by two coffee obsessives, this excellent range packs a punch that’ll linger in all the best ways.
So, a month may have passed but I'm still holding onto all the goodness of Falmouth and most importantly - Highcliffe. Special in every way, this is a truly unique Cornish surprise packaged and waiting for you to enjoy.
