STRIPD TRAVELS: BACKWELL HOUSE / BRISTOL

August 9, 2017

Picture this; a beautifully reformed Georgian building, luxurious alpine inspired interiors and a menu ready to tackle the toughest of critics – intrigued?  Then let me introduce you to Backwell House, Bristol’s latest accolade (and The Sunday Times latest notable).

Showcasing the very best of the unusual and creative (think Kilner jars made into lamp shades and old suitcases filled with concrete and transformed into bathroom sinks) this 19th century mellow stone country house is a destination for those looking to break away from the boring –leaving you with some pretty impressive memoirs to swank about.

The Rooms

Backwell House boasts nine double en-suite rooms – all individually designed with reconditioned vintage bathtubs, gorgeous antiques and reclaimed timber wood. Tastefully decorated with gothic tones, chic copper interiors and cosy cream carpets – these countryside hideaways exude pure indulgence. Not to mention the winter lodge inspired beds - topped with sumptuously soft Hungarian goose-feathered bedding ensuring whatever side of the mattress you rise from- you’ll feel euphoric. Due to the nature of this large-scale refurbishment, every room holds some form of distinctive characteristic. From beaming skylights in the ‘Hobb’s’ bathroom to the balconette bathtub view in ‘Toogood’ – present day General Manager (and creative brainchild) Guy Williams has made no effort to conceal the unique charm of this buildings historic heritage.

The Food

Considering Backwell House is promoting decadence in every other aspect of its grounds (Cinema room, cocktail bar and soon to be Gin snug) - the top notch lunch and dinner menu has followed naturally. Commended by British publications like The Telegraph and local food expert Mark Taylor (Bristol Post), their reputation is no laughing matter. With such a diversely creative menu, their choice of starters, mains and deserts demonstrates the culinary brilliance this B&B has to offer. If you’re staying the night – the breakfast menu may not impress as much - but this shouldn’t put you off. It’s safe to say we’ve seen enough of smashed avocado and poached eggs for 2017.

There’s no doubt that Backwell House has made some excellent first impressions since its opening last year – and with the addition of a new treatment room, cool basement floor gin snug and surplus boutique rooms on the horizon, there’s no doubt this will be on every wanderluster’s list very soon.
